Could you have Fibromyalgia?
Let UNIQ Physical Therapy help you find relief!
Some pain is normal from time to time. You may be sore from exercising too much, or you may stub your toe on furniture. Most of the time, you are able to shake it off or take ibuprofen and go about your day. However, if you have chronic pain that is accompanied by fatigue, changes in mood, or irregular sleep patterns, this may indicate a more serious physiological disorder, such as fibromyalgia.
If you identify with these symptoms, contact UNIQ Physical Therapy today to set up a consultation with one of our Warminster, PA and Lansdale, PA physical therapists.
Fibromyalgia: what is it?
Fibromyalgia refers to a group of symptoms that are experienced by someone with the condition.
The most common symptoms of fibromyalgia include:
- Fluctuations in mood
- Forgetfulness or disorientation
- Disrupted sleep cycles/irregular sleep schedules
- Fatigue
- Chronic and/or sharp muscle pains
- Tender areas of the body
- Sensitivity to touch/numbness
- Nausea
Although the exact cause of fibromyalgia is unknown, some medical experts believe it may be caused by an overactive sympathetic nervous system – the body’s reaction to stress. As people usually develop their first symptoms of fibromyalgia after experiencing a physically or emotionally traumatic event, this theory makes sense, but it has never been scientifically proven.
Fibromyalgia is more common in women and can run in the family.
How does UNIQ Physical Therapy treat fibromyalgia?
There is no single, guaranteed treatment for fibromyalgia since it is not a disease, but rather a range of symptoms. For managing symptoms, primary care physicians usually prescribe pain medications or anti-depressants; however, those medications do not address the chronic nature of the disease or the loss of function that chronic pain and distress typically bring.
The treatments we provide at UNIQ Physical Therapy are effective for both managing long-term symptoms and regaining optimum body function. Our Warminster, PA or Lansdale, PA physical therapists will examine your physical abilities, analyze your medical history, and discuss your current symptoms, in order to design a treatment plan that will fit your unique needs.
Typically, pain-relieving modalities are used to provide relief and promote healing. Our Warminster, PA and Lansdale, PA physical therapists may use ice and heat therapy, trigger point therapy, massage, stretching, electrical stimulation, or other therapeutic tools that could be beneficial to your recovery. After this, your treatments will shift toward active therapies, such as muscle strengthening, range-of-motion activities, and cardiovascular exercises.
